Creating Access and Opportunity Taylor Fitzgerald on Building a More Inclusive Community

When people have access to the right resources, opportunities, and support, entire communities become stronger. In this episode of Taylor Community Connection, Terry Crosby sits down with Taylor Fitzgerald, Development and Engagement Manager at The Ability Center, to discuss the organization's mission of empowering people with disabilities and creating a more inclusive Northwest Ohio.

Taylor shares her passion for relationship building and community engagement, which makes her role at The Ability Center especially meaningful. Serving 13 counties throughout the region, The Ability Center provides programs and services for individuals with physical and cognitive disabilities, helping people achieve greater independence and quality of life. For Taylor, the work is about creating connections, building partnerships, and finding ways to strengthen the community through collaboration.

Throughout the conversation, Taylor highlights several of the organization's impactful programs. One of the most recognized is the Assistance Dog Program, which trains service dogs, skill companion dogs, and school facility dogs that support individuals and students throughout the area. These specially trained animals provide independence, comfort, and assistance while making a meaningful difference in people's daily lives.

Another life changing resource offered through The Ability Center is its Free Durable Medical Equipment Program. Community members can access items such as wheelchairs, walkers, hospital beds, lifts, and other essential equipment at no cost. This program helps remove financial barriers and ensures people have access to the equipment they need when they need it most.

Taylor also discusses the organization's advocacy work, which focuses on public access, transportation, healthcare, and housing. Through disability rights advocacy, legal resources, and navigation services, The Ability Center helps individuals and families find solutions, access resources, and better understand available support systems.

Additional services include home modifications such as ramps, grab bars, stair lifts, and accessibility improvements, as well as independent living programs designed to help individuals stay engaged and connected within the community. Taylor notes that many people know The Ability Center for one specific service but are often surprised by the full scope of programs available.

The conversation also highlights an exciting upcoming initiative, the Access Summit, a one day conference focused on disability awareness, innovation, accessibility, and community impact. The event will feature keynote speakers, educational sessions, and discussions about how emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, can create opportunities for people with and without disabilities.

Beyond her professional role, Taylor shares a personal connection to community through her grandfather, Toledo sports legend Ralph Lewis, reflecting on the values of service, humility, and giving back that continue to inspire her work today.

This episode is a reminder that accessibility is about more than accommodations. It is about creating opportunities, building connections, and ensuring every person has the chance to thrive.
