Building Dignity Shannon Nowak on Hope, Opportunity, and Cherry Street Mission

For many people, Cherry Street Mission is known as a place that provides meals, shelter, and clothing. While those services remain essential, there is an even bigger story happening every day. In this episode of Taylor Community Connection, Tom sits down with Shannon Nowak, Vice President of Development & Strategic Advancement at Cherry Street Mission, to discuss how the organization is helping individuals move beyond crisis and toward lasting independence.

Shannon explains that Cherry Street Mission's approach is about much more than meeting immediate needs. Their goal is to help each guest land, learn, and launch by providing personalized support that addresses the barriers keeping people from long term stability. Through navigators, the Ready for Life program, workforce development, transportation assistance, and ongoing encouragement, guests receive the tools they need to build a brighter future.

The conversation also highlights the upcoming Be the Bridge fundraiser, one of Cherry Street Mission's signature events.

Held beneath the Martin Luther King Jr. Bridge in downtown Toledo, the evening brings the community together for local food, live music, and a live auction while raising funds that directly impact the lives of guests. This year's event will feature approximately 13 local restaurant grazing stations, a jazz band, and a live painting by local mural artist Dean Davis, which will be auctioned during the evening. Proceeds will help complete an exciting café improvement project that adds glass conference rooms to provide guests with safe, private spaces to meet with navigators, attorneys, counselors, and other support professionals. The goal is simple but meaningful: provide another level of dignity by allowing important conversations to happen in a confidential, welcoming environment.

Throughout the interview, Shannon emphasizes that meaningful change happens through community. Workforce development, transportation, mentoring, and compassionate relationships all play a role in helping someone take the next step toward employment, housing, and long term stability. Every volunteer, donor, and community partner becomes part of that journey.
