Artificial intelligence is changing the way we work, learn, and solve problems, but according to LeSean Shaw, it's about much more than using ChatGPT. In this episode of Taylor Community Connection, Terry sits down with the Chief Operating Officer of Actual Reality Technologies to discuss how AI is creating new opportunities for businesses, nonprofits, schools, and young people across Northwest Ohio.
A lifelong Toledo resident and graduate of Waite High School, LeSean has dedicated his career to using technology to strengthen the community that helped shape him. Today, he serves as COO of Actual Reality Technologies, a Perrysburg based technology company that helps organizations discover practical, real world applications for artificial intelligence. Rather than focusing solely on popular AI tools, LeSean and his team work with manufacturers, financial institutions, nonprofits, universities, and local governments to help them understand how AI can improve efficiency, solve challenges, and create measurable results.
Beyond his work in the private sector, LeSean also leads Empowered AI, the nonprofit arm of the organization focused on making sure technology remains accessible to everyone.
"We don't want anyone left behind," LeSean explains, emphasizing that AI education should be available to people of all ages and backgrounds. Through community programming, Empowered AI introduces students and families to artificial intelligence in ways that encourage creativity, confidence, and lifelong learning.
One of Empowered AI's signature initiatives is the Young Empowered Authors program.
The program teaches children how to use artificial intelligence as a creative tool to write, illustrate, format, publish, and even sell their own books. Students begin by learning the fundamentals of storytelling before using AI tools such as ChatGPT and Copilot to help organize their ideas. They then utilize Storybook Studio, an application developed by Actual Reality Technologies, to create illustrations and prepare their books for publication.
The growth of the program has been remarkable.
When Taylor Automotive Family first partnered with Empowered AI, approximately 40 students participated. Today, the program has expanded to more than 120 young authors, ranging from 6 to 14 years old, representing organizations including the YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, Hawkins STEM Academy, Stewart Girls Academy, Toledo Lead Resource Center, and several other community partners.
LeSean believes the experience extends far beyond writing a book.
By the end of the program, students become published authors while also learning entrepreneurial skills. During the annual Young Empowered Authors Publisher's Party, each child receives copies of their book to sell, giving them the opportunity to earn money from something they created themselves. More importantly, they experience what it feels like to be celebrated for accomplishing something positive.
"It's often that kids receive attention when they're doing something bad," LeSean shares.
"We want to make sure they're receiving attention, gratitude, and celebration for accomplishing something good."
The celebration itself has become an event unlike any other. The red carpet publisher's party brings together hundreds of students, families, educators, and community supporters to recognize the achievements of these young authors while encouraging them to continue learning, creating, and dreaming bigger.
In addition to his work with Actual Reality Technologies and Empowered AI, LeSean also serves as President of the African American Chamber of Commerce, continuing his commitment to helping businesses and communities grow through education, collaboration, and innovation.
This conversation highlights an exciting future where technology becomes a tool for opportunity rather than intimidation. Through education, creativity, and community partnerships, LeSean Shaw is helping ensure the next generation is prepared not only to use artificial intelligence, but to shape what comes next.
