Since 2005, The Cocoon has stood as Wood County’s only comprehensive domestic and sexual violence agency, offering 24/7 support, emergency shelter, and advocacy for survivors and their families. In our latest Taylor Community Connection episode, Robin Guidera, Director of Development & Communications, shares how the demand has grown drastically since COVID, and how The Cocoon is stepping up to meet this growing need.

Last year alone, the agency responded to over 7,000 requests for help, served more than 900 survivors, and housed nearly 100 individuals in emergency shelter situations for an average stay of 87 days. All services are free of charge. That includes vital medical, legal, and safety planning support, as well as counseling for those escaping abuse.

One of the most impacting things Robin discusses is how survivors often face barriers beyond the usual. Some are afraid to leave an unsafe home because of pets, or because of fear of not being believed. The Cocoon is one of the few shelters that allows family pets inside, helping reduce obstacles for people trying to find safety.

Robin also talks about the importance of language, how calling survivors, believing them, and avoiding judgment make a real difference in their healing. It’s not just about having safe spaces, but how we communicate, support, and uplift people when they are vulnerable. It’s a central piece of The Cocoon’s work.

The video highlights how The Cocoon is currently serving the community: stepping in with emergency shelter when people have nowhere else to go, providing trauma-informed legal help, and working around the clock to offer safe, compassionate support.

If you want to understand how community care can look like action, this episode is for you.
