Taylor Cancer Research Center Opens New Research Pharmacy to Expand Precision Cancer Research in Northwest Ohio

Another major milestone has been reached at the Taylor Cancer Research Center, as the opening of a new research pharmacy strengthens the center's ability to bring advanced cancer research and innovative treatment opportunities to patients here in Northwest Ohio.

The new pharmacy will support medications used in clinical research and precision therapy trials, adding important infrastructure as the Taylor Cancer Research Center continues expanding its clinical trial program.

For the Taylor Automotive Family, seeing this next step become a reality is especially meaningful because it builds upon the original vision behind the center: helping patients access cutting edge cancer research without having to travel hours away from their families, friends, physicians, and support systems.

Bringing Advanced Research Closer to Home

The Taylor Cancer Research Center was established in 2024 following a $1 million gift from Steve Taylor and the Taylor Automotive Family in honor of Julie Taylor. Julie battled multiple myeloma and received treatment at The Toledo Clinic Cancer Centers. After her passing, the Taylor family wanted to honor her while creating something that could make a lasting difference for cancer patients throughout the region.

The family had also seen friends battling cancer who needed to travel significant distances to access advanced treatment. That experience helped shape the mission of building a precision therapy research program right here in Northwest Ohio.

Today, the Taylor Cancer Research Center operates within The Toledo Clinic Cancer Center in Maumee, bringing research, treatment, and patient support together in one setting. Its mission is to expand precision therapy research opportunities for patients in Northwest Ohio and beyond.

What Precision Therapy Means for Patients

Unlike approaches that treat cancers primarily according to where they originate in the body, precision therapy looks at the genetic and molecular changes helping an individual patient's cancer grow.

Through comprehensive gene profiling of blood or cancer tissue, researchers can identify molecular signals that may be driving the disease. That information can then help determine whether a patient may qualify for a therapy or clinical trial designed around that particular molecular target.

It is an approach centered on understanding that every cancer can be different and creating opportunities to more closely match treatment with the biology of an individual patient's disease.

A Growing Clinical Trial Program

The research pharmacy arrives as the center continues building its portfolio of precision therapy clinical trials.

Taylor Cancer Research Center currently lists studies involving areas including non small cell lung cancer, EGFR mutated lung cancer, advanced solid tumors, and recurrent or metastatic breast cancer, with additional interventional precision studies continuing to expand the research program.

The center reported that by June 2025, 25 patients had entered precision therapeutic trials and 51 had entered observation biomarker trials, while another 30 interventional precision studies were open for treatment opportunity at that time.

A dedicated research pharmacy represents another piece of the infrastructure necessary to support that growth and the specialized medications involved in clinical research.

From the beginning, Taylor Cancer Research Center has been about more than building a research program. It has been about giving people hope and creating opportunities for patients to explore innovative care while remaining close to the people they love.

Every new trial, expanded research capability, and investment in infrastructure moves that vision forward.
