Leading with Intention Hyfah Hilou on Community Health, Collaboration, and Creating Change

Meaningful change begins with people. It starts by listening, understanding challenges, and working together to create solutions. In this episode of Women in the Driver Seat, we sit down with Hyfah Hilou of the Health Council of Northwest Ohio to discuss community health, leadership, and the power of meeting people where they are.

Hyfah's career journey is anything but traditional. From working in fine dining to serving in firefighting and emergency medical services, to leadership roles in healthcare and philanthropy, each step has reinforced the same lesson: people come first. She explains that her experiences taught her how to anticipate needs, build trust, and support individuals during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Throughout the conversation, Hyfah emphasizes the importance of a human centered approach to community health. For her, meaningful progress begins with listening. Instead of creating solutions for people, organizations must work alongside them, understanding the barriers they face and building solutions together. Those barriers often include transportation, healthcare access, housing, food insecurity, and education.

Hyfah also highlights the critical role of collaboration. No single organization can solve every challenge facing a community. Real progress happens when nonprofits, businesses, community leaders, and residents come together with a shared purpose. By removing silos and encouraging partnerships, communities can create stronger support systems and more effective outcomes.

One of the most powerful moments she shares is a personal leadership experience. After being told she did not belong in a leadership position because of her background and ethnicity, Hyfah faced a choice. Rather than allowing someone else to define her future, she continued to lead and prove that no one else gets to determine her potential or her ceiling. Her story is a powerful example of resilience, determination, and self belief.

The conversation also provides insight into the work of the Health Council of Northwest Ohio, which focuses on connecting community members, organizations, and leaders to improve access to essential resources. Hyfah shares the story of a homeless high school senior who needed food, transportation, and support to finish school. Through partnerships and coordinated efforts, the Health Council and its community partners helped ensure the student had access to the resources needed to graduate. It is one example of how collaboration can change lives.

When asked what advice she would give to someone who wants to make a difference, Hyfah's answer is simple: start where you are. You do not need a title, a large budget, or a formal position to create positive change. Building relationships, serving others, and acting with good intentions are often the first steps toward making a lasting impact.

This episode is a reminder that leadership is not about titles. It is about purpose, relationships, and the willingness to help others thrive.
