Season 4 of Women in the Driver Seat begins with a story that reminds us just how powerful courage and compassion can be, no matter your age. In this episode, we sit down with Avalon Ayres, Co Founder of The Avalon Foundation, a youth led nonprofit dedicated to supporting children facing painful medical treatments and rare disease challenges.
Avalon shares her personal journey living with Hypophosphatasia, and how her experiences shaped her desire to help others. During some of her most difficult treatment days, her grandmother created something simple yet meaningful called a “pain box.” Inside were small rewards and encouragements that helped Avalon stay motivated and focused through the pain. That idea became the foundation for something much bigger.
Through The Avalon Foundation, Avalon turned that moment into a mission. The organization’s Pain Box program is designed to help children facing treatments by giving them something to look forward to, turning hard days into achievable wins. Each box is filled with thoughtful items that provide encouragement, distraction, and a sense of accomplishment.
Avalon also talks about the expansion of their Care Box program, which brings support directly into hospital settings, helping even more children feel seen, supported, and less alone during challenging moments. Her work is a powerful example of how lived experience can create meaningful change for others.
This conversation is a reminder that leadership is not defined by age. It is defined by heart, creativity, and the willingness to take action. Avalon’s story shows how one idea, rooted in love and resilience, can grow into something that impacts countless lives.
