For many veterans, the transition from military service to civilian life can be one of the most challenging journeys they will ever face. In this episode of Women in the Driver Seat, we sit down with Jamie Paxton, retired Air Force veteran, nonprofit executive, and founder of Little Blessings Veteran and Community Outreach, to discuss leadership, resilience, and the powerful work being done to support veterans and their families.
After serving her country for 25 years, Jamie expected the transition to civilian life to be relatively smooth. Instead, she found herself facing challenges she never anticipated, including anxiety, depression, and feelings of isolation. Drawing on her own experiences and determination to ensure other veterans would not face those struggles alone, she began building a path toward healing and service once again.
That journey ultimately led to the creation of Little Blessings Veteran and Community Outreach, an organization dedicated to helping veterans reconnect, heal, and find support in a welcoming environment. Through her work, Jamie quickly realized that many veterans shared a common experience. Despite returning home, many felt disconnected from their communities and struggled to find a sense of belonging. The organization has become a sanctuary where veterans can build relationships, receive support, and realize they are not alone.
Throughout the conversation, Jamie reflects on her groundbreaking military career, including becoming the first female First Sergeant in her unit. She shares how resilience, compassion, structure, and service continue to guide her leadership style today. While her role has changed, her mission remains the same: helping others navigate challenges and move forward with confidence.
One of the most unique aspects of Little Blessings is its equine assisted mental health program. Partnering licensed mental health professionals with specially trained horses, the organization offers a nontraditional approach to healing. Jamie explains that horses have an incredible ability to mirror emotions, helping veterans recognize stress, trauma, and emotional patterns in ways that traditional counseling alone often cannot. Through these interactions, participants gain valuable insight, build trust, and begin their healing journey alongside what many describe as a new "battle buddy."
Jamie also emphasizes the importance of educating communities about the realities veterans face after military service. She believes that while civilians may never fully understand the military experience, empathy, compassion, and a willingness to listen can go a long way toward bridging the gap. Supporting veterans begins with understanding that their challenges often extend far beyond their time in uniform.
At its core, Little Blessings is about connection. It is a place where veterans can find support, families can find hope, and healing can happen in a way that feels natural, welcoming, and empowering.
This conversation is a powerful reminder that service does not end when military service concludes. For leaders like Jamie Paxton, it simply takes on a new form.
