Sports can shape far more than athletic ability. They can build confidence, connection, discipline, and lifelong wellness. On this episode of Women in the Driver Seat, we sit down with Joan Collar, Board President of the Lima Area Tennis Association, to talk about how tennis continues to positively impact individuals and families throughout the community.
Joan shares her journey from player to community leader and explains why creating access to tennis for all ages has become such an important mission. One of LATA’s most impactful programs is its free summer tennis camp, a flagship initiative that has introduced children to the sport since 1979. By offering loaner rackets and removing financial barriers, the organization ensures any child who wants to learn has the opportunity to step onto the court.
In the conversation, Joan highlights LATA’s expanding lineup of programs designed to engage players at every stage of life. From winter camps that help middle school students prepare for high school tennis to Adult Tennis 101 classes, cardio tennis sessions, and fun community events like red ball tennis, the organization continues creating opportunities for people to stay active and connected.
Joan also speaks honestly about the challenges of fundraising as programming grows and demand increases. Hosting USTA tournaments and community events not only brings visitors to the region, but also strengthens local engagement and supports the long term future of tennis in Lima.
Beyond the game itself, Joan emphasizes the life lessons tennis teaches, especially integrity. The sport encourages accountability, respect, perseverance, and personal growth, lessons that continue long after players leave the court.
This episode is a reminder that community sports programs are about more than competition. They are about creating opportunity, building confidence, and helping people of all ages discover what they are capable of.
